Minister Confirms Ministry of Defence Looking at Security Risk from Vehicles from China, as Personnel Instructed to Avoid Confidential Discussions in Vehicles.

An defense official has stated that the Ministry of Defence is actively looking into the potential security risks associated with Chinese-made cars, and personnel have been told to refrain from discussing secret information in any vehicles.

Security Advice for Defence Staff

In a recent interview on LBC, a defence minister addressed claims that MoD officials have been instructed not to discuss secret material while riding in Chinese cars.

The minister explained that the ministry is “examining” cars from China within its fleets, but noted that safety is a concern in all modern cars.

Our department has a collection of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles represent a very small number.
But regardless of if you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a car from another country, our instruction to our staff is to avoid connecting MoD devices into their car, to avoid having discussions at a secret level in any vehicle, due to the increasing threats of eavesdropping that are present in all automobile, to restrict those secret conversations in secure locations. That’s a prudent and reasonable thing for anyone concerned about security.

After it was suggested that it would be prudent for the ministry to cease using every Chinese vehicles, the minister replied: ‘That’s exactly what we’re investigating at the present time.”

Broader Security Background

The revelation comes as claims from Norway and Denmark have warned the United Kingdom to the presence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese electric buses, which could enable the Chinese government to switch off public transport and bring disruption to transport systems.

Additionally, a Russian spy ship has been directing lasers at Royal Air Force aircrew, described as a “extremely risky” act by defence officials.

The broader security situation highlights the significance of robust protocols and caution in every aspects of government activities, from vehicle usage to discussions practices.
